When I speak to a lot of people about moving home, they gasp in horror at the thought of moving, they simply have too much stuff to even contemplate it.
Even if you don’t have piles of stuff in the loft, twenty years of spices in the cupboard or shelves full or ornaments to package up, it is often necessary to declutter before your home move.
Making your house feel more spacious and therefore more appealing to potential buyers
Reducing the cost of removals by getting rid of unwanted items
Ensuring that you don’t have a sense of whelm and overcrowded home if downsizing
Giving yourself head space. Decluttering your house can often help declutter your mind at this stressful time
How to Declutter
Decluttering can sometimes be tricky as we often have emotional ties to objects.
Before you start, create a logical order around your house. Start at the top of the house and work down or vice versa. If you go from room to room and without any fixed purpose or order, you will increase your stress levels and risk not doing anything properly at all.
Decide what you are going to do with items and ensure that they go into fixed piles: charity shop, selling (eBay, gumtree, freecycle or similar) or temporary storage. If you have time you could even have some fun by taking items to a car boot sale.
Take everything out of cupboards or drawers to see what you have. Then decide to put back only what you need. Everything else can go into one of the piles you have decided on.
If you find yourself deciding that you need to keep everything, take a break and come back to it with a fresh perspective. When did you last use the item or when did you last wear it?
If you are keeping items ‘just in case’ something else breaks or you may need it sometime, ask yourself if that item is worth the cost of moving or of storage. If you attach a ‘cost of keeping’ to a ‘rainy day’ item, you are far more likely to give it to a charity shop or put it in the bin.
Take everything out of kitchen cupboards. Check use by dates, throwing out anything that is inedible. Create a list of items that need finishing or eating before you move and create a menu to use them up. List all items in the freezer and do the same. Removal companies won’t transport freezer food, so it is best to eat as much of it as you can to avoid it defrosting.
