There are several options for home removals.  Remember that not only do you need to move all of your furniture, there will also be a considerable number of boxes to move. These depend on the amount that you are happy to be involved and company insurance.

  • Do It Yourself – It you have a van or rent a van, this in the cheapest, but the most time consuming and back breaking option.

  • Hiring a man with a van removals – This option is likely to be cheaper than a professional removal company but is unlikely to come with the professionalism and care of a removal company.

  • Removal companies – This is a better option if you are travelling a great distance and/or own a lot of items.  You will be expected to pack and unpack your own boxes, as well as taking apart beds etc, although some firms offer to do this for you at an extra fee.

  • Removal & Packing Service – If you prefer a stress free and less time-consuming move, a packing and unpacking service can be provided with the removal or through a separate firm.

What to consider when choosing the best removal company:

You need a reliable company that will turn up on time, take care of your belongings and have the appropriate insurance in place just in case something is broken or your home damaged.

  • Check the company is a member of the British Association of Removers (BAR) or the National Guild of Removers and Storers (NGRS). This means that they have met the right criteria in experience, training and insurance.

  • Get at least three quotes from removals firms and if you need them, check that they provide packing boxes and hanging boxes at no extra charge.

  • Check companies in the area you are moving from and the area you are moving to.  They maybe more competitive.

  • Make sure they have removals insurance and ask to see evidence.  If you have any highly valuable items, make sure they are covered as single items.

  • Make sure the removals company visits you to undertake a survey and establish an estimate.  This will avoid problems such as under estimation of boxes and access issues.

There are several ways to find Removal Providers:
